ho|mol|o|gous «hoh MOL uh guhs», adjective.
1. corresponding in position, proportion, value, structure, or other property.
2. Biology. corresponding in type of structure and in origin but not necessarily in function or appearance. The foreleg of a horse, the arm of a man, and the wing of a bird are homologous.
3. Chemistry. belonging to a series where successive members differ regularly in formula, especially a series of organic compounds differing by multiples of -CH2, such as the alcohols and aldehydes.
4. (of cells or antiserums) immunologically identical.
